Mao’s rule on China

1b) “Mao Zedong’s rule brought much suffering to the Chinese people.” Do you agree? EYA (13)

Mao headed the new government in 1949, aiming to transform China into a communist’s country. As state chairman of the PRC, Mao introduced many policies and reforms. Most of these policies have brought much change to China. Some have brought bitter sufferings and others happiness and joy. This essay will examine the impacts of Maoist rule on China.

The great leap forward (GLF) was a new revolution, which was called upon by Mao to overcome China’s problems in a distinct path of Chinese socialism. The GLF was a series of experiments to speed up China’s economic development by traditional and primitive means. Mao strongly believed that China’s economy should walk on “two legs.” They are the industrial and agrarian sectors. To speed up the growth of the steel industry, ‘backyard steel making’ was introduced. Millions of peasants were taught small-scale steel making in the hope that the additional labor would help increase the output. Furthermore, peasants were organized into people’s communes which were collectives containing a few thousand people. These communes had their own schools and healthcare facilites. Each was given land and received a share of the profits after selling the crops. However, private ownership of tools or property was strictly prohibited. Due to the GLF China experienced both positive and negative impacts.

There was a loss of initiatives and motivation as productive farmers had the same pay as less productive ones. Thus there was no motivation to work and productivity was low. Another negative impact of the GLF was that there was a decrease in industrial and agricultural output. People did not have the necessary skills and knowledge to produce backyard steel as much of the steel that was produced did not have high quality and they could not be used. Many also lost their lives in building dams and canals. This was due to the primitive equipment, which was used thus, causing the basis of dams to be weak and eventually give way to kill many. The agrarian sector of the economy also entered into bad times as crops rotted due to the negligence of the peasants who worked on canals and dams. This brought about great starvation among the people, killing thousands. Therfore, we can see from the above that many people have lost their lives in the great leap forward and the economy of China also stagnated thus proving that the great leap forward is a big failure.

On the contrary, the results of the GLF were seen as significant economic progress in the country. The balance in the agrarian and industrial sectors was beneficial for China’s economic growth. It also avoided the mass duplication of work, hence achieving economies of scale. The organization of communes made China easy to rule and thus through all these successes the Chinese path of socialism was attained. Therefore, the GLF was seen as a success as it brought much prosperity rather than sufferings.

The great proletariat Cultural Revolution was another of Mao’s policies that was introduced to China. Mao embarked this revolution and the leftists in an attempt of bringing back ‘true’ communism. The aims of the Cultural Revolution were to bring back China to the right socialist track and to reeducate the young of the need to serve the people and the motherland. In 1962,Mao launched the socialist education campaign, which reintroduced socialist values and ideals. It encouraged the masses to criticize the power of the officials. The revolution soon became a national movement to reestablish communes and to break corruption in the party. Another measure introduced was the learn from the PLA campaign. This campaign was brought about to strengthen Mao’s control of the army. Soldiers were thought the principles of socialism and to set good examples. Mao also publicized the projects that his ideas succeeded in. This was essential to Mao as it supported Mao’s claims that economic development was very much dependent upon correct political ideology, mass mobilization and workers’ initiatives rather than technology and material incentives.

The Cultural Revolution experienced much setback as it plunged China into a deep crisis. It did not bring about ‘true’ communism it only brought about brutality, violence and suffering. Students in China formed themselves into red guards and abused the power that was given to them. They attacked revisionism wherever they saw it. Posters which contained the ‘ill’ doings of teachers and political officials were pasted everywhere. Hence many teachers and rightists have been tortured and killed without any reason. Education stagnated as millions of young people missed out on education as schools and universities were closed down during the Cultural Revolution. Most of these students were sent to the countryside to learn farming from the peasants. This increased the number of illiterate people and thus contributed to China’s backwardness. Production of food and industrial goods declined tremendously and threw many into poverty. Therefore instead of bringing china into the path of ‘true’ communism it threw it into a rage of chaos.

In conclusion, I truly believe that Mao’s policies and ideas brought much suffering and hardship to the people of China. The GLF has clearly shown us that Mao’s believe of achieving economic success through the usage of primitive methods clearly shows us that it could not work as the economy of China faced much backwardness. Furthermore, thousands of people died in the constructing of dams. . Although China also experienced economic prosperity, it is considered useless as it is losing its chief resource, its people. The Cultural Revolution proved just as detrimental as the GLF. Teachers who serve the country by educating the young were killed and tortured. The younger generation were the most affected as they had no education and due to their illiteracy they are unable to survive after Mao. Thus through these atrocities, it is only true that Maoist rule was harsh and it caused much hardship among the people.

Question: “ Public campaigns are hardly ever effective.” Do you agree with this assertion?

Public campaigns have become a way of life for many of us. Many are very much unaware of how public campaigns are very effective. If not for the world wide dolphin campaign in, we would not have saved thousands of dolphins and if not for the anti-black discrimination campaigns in America, we would not have saved hundreds of blacks from physical assault.From these campaigns, one can see to what extent public campaigns have greatly influenced the mindset of the society and the individuals alike. The art of public campaigning has raised our society to be in connection with the rest of the world. Thus public campaigning has brought us into a new era, which has changed the routine and insulated way of life and it also effectively informs and educates our society.

China’s ever increasing population has baffled both the communist government and the world alike. In the 1970s the ever-increasing population has brought about great conflict between traditions and reality in China. This problem has Chinese politicians to worry greatly about poverty in the country and the rapid decline in natural resources. The lack of education in contraception methods and the inability to purchase contraceptives was the cause of this conflict. In a desperate attempt to simultaneously educate and to control the problem of overpopulation, the government started public campaigns such as the ‘Later, Longer and Fewer’ movement. At first these campaigns were met with great hostility and ignorance from the Chinese masses as the views expressed in these campaigns conflicted with ancient traditions and practices. Soon, a new ‘cultural’ revolution broke out in China where people were convinced after long periods of campaigning that the only way to end their poverty was to decrease the number of off springs they should have. In fact, the policy was not only popular in urban China but also in rural China. Results have shown a nine percent decrease in population, which was termed later as the “remarkable” decrease. Thus through this example of China we can see how national plight was reversed to the world commenting China as a global pride.

Another campaign closer at haome would be the speak good English movement. Spoken English is a very important aspect in a multi cultural society, which is undergoing constant globalization. Singapore, is a young and vulnerable country. Our country is a very unique place where various cultures and traditions thrive. Although we are different in colour, language, race and the religion we practice, we are bound together as one big family through a term general to all of us, and we are Singaporeans. This is the island where the people recognize themselves as “one people, one nation, one Singapore.” However there is a barrier of language that separates us. To break this barrier in communication and promote bonding in the community, our government has initiated the good English speaking movement, which is received with great popularity from the people. This campaign not only educates people of how easy it is to converse in English it also builds inter connection among the various races. Furthermore, it is only right that this education of the English language should also be promoted to children who participate in fun activities to learn about the interesting and unique world of spoken English. Through this campaign we have not only promoted the usage of the English language in conversations but we have also instilled the value of unitedness among the various races thus contributing to racial harmony.

Police investigations have confirmed the rise of drug addicts by two and a half percent in Singapore. Last year alone, twenty drug traffickers have been sentenced to death and thirty seven drug addicts caught. One of society’s great ills would be drug addiction. The main reason why this is very prominent in third world and first world countries is because it is thought as ‘cool’ among the teenagers. Once addicted, it is not easy to snap out of it. Singapore, in an attempt to wipe out drug addiction has proposed the anti drug campaigns. Although this campaign was targeted towards teenagers, it was later changed to suit the general public. This campaign is to educate the youth on the consequences of drug addiction and what harm it does to our body. This is brought about by students wearing collared pins to support the anti drug movement. Later in the week, presentations are held by the narcotics department, which ends off with a quiz on drugs. After the implementation of this campaign there has been a reduce in drug addicts. Furthermore, students have commented that learning about drugs was very interesting and varied thus the campaign was very successful in disseminating information to not only students but also to the general public.

However, the critics of the opposing view believe that public campaigns are a waste of time and money. Their claim was that even after the anti drug movements there are still some who consume drugs. They also state that the wearing of the anti drug pins are mere fashion accessories. Thus it is of a waste of money in investing in such collar pins. However I truly believe that the opposing party has not clearly comprehended the results of this campaign. Due to this campaign about twenty percent of drug abuse cases have decreased. Furthermore, many have written to the straits times regarding the many facts that they have learnt through this campaign. Therefore this campaign is a clear indication that these programmes educate the masses on knowledge they do not know.

In conclusion, I believe that public campaigns are very important in disseminating information and it is a great tool, which has educated many. Although some do believe it is a waste of time and money but morally it is “God” as it points out the wrongs and the rights.
